Singing and learning to read music requires the mastery of certain skills and facts.  We have created a skills-based coaching and testing program called “Choral Creature Skills” in which singers are individually encouraged to grow in their knowledge of pitch, rhythm, and healthy vocal production.  Students work their way through four leveled packets while reading from actual sheet music during regular rehearsals.  Additional coaching for matching pitch and accelerated learners is available for outside of rehearsal time for an additional fee.

Choral Creature Skill Ranks:

REDMusic Student

All Cantate Choir members begin at this level.  Students work on passing the 1st Choral Creature Skill Packet.

PURPLEMusic Apprentice

Students who pass the 1st packet become “Music Apprentices”.  The singer then begins to work through the Level 2 packet.

BLUEJourney Singer

Students who have passed the Level 2 packet become Journey Singers.  Students at this level demonstrate a working knowledge of music theory.  They can read a wide range of rhythms and pitches and know how to discern key signatures.  The Journey Singer can take their knowledge and apply it to reading music in rehearsal while being able to coach less-experienced singers.  This student begins to work towards the Master level with help from the directors.

GREEN Master Singer

A Master Singer is a student who has developed their skills to the point that they can read music at a stable and functional level.  They are a valuable help to our less experienced singers during rehearsal. Their knowledge of reading music is a great preparation for further studies in music at the college level.

Why we do this…

Our theme verse states: “Shout for Joy to God, all the earth; sing the glory of His name; give to him glorious praise!” Psalm 66:1-2  It is our goal to train the Cantate Home School Choir singers to make music unto the Lord in a glorious and excellent manner.  We approach this goal with reverence and a joy that reflects the awesome nature of our God and King.
